The Purpose of Wealth – Money as a Tool for God's Kingdom

Using Wealth to Serve God's Purpose

Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about Biblical Stewardship and the importance of shifting from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset. Now, let’s go deeper and explore the purpose of wealth. Many of us have been taught that money is either something to chase after or something to be avoided. But what does God actually say about wealth?

💡 This Week’s Focus: The Purpose of Wealth
Money touches nearly every area of our lives—how we live, give, work, and plan for the future. But as believers, we’re called to view wealth through a different lens. The Bible doesn’t teach that money itself is evil. In fact, it recognizes money as a necessary tool. What Scripture does warn us about is the love of money—when wealth becomes our focus instead of a resource we steward for God’s glory.

📖 Key Verse:
1 Timothy 6:10 (NLT): "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."

This verse is often misquoted as “money is the root of all evil,” but it’s really addressing our relationship with money. Scripture challenges us to examine what drives us. When the pursuit of wealth becomes our priority, it can lead us away from our faith and from the peace and purpose God desires for us. The issue isn’t money itself—it’s when our desire for it begins to compete with our devotion to God.

👉 Money should serve us, not the other way around.

🔹 Three Biblical Purposes of Wealth:
1. To Provide for Your Needs
God is fully aware of our practical, day-to-day needs—things like housing, food, transportation, and clothing. He’s not disconnected from the demands of daily life. In fact, Scripture makes it clear that caring for our household is a core part of faithful living. Providing for our families isn’t just about responsibility—it’s a reflection of stewardship.

📖 “But if anyone does not provide for his own family, especially for his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” — 1 Timothy 5:8, CSB

Managing money wisely helps us meet those needs with intention and peace. It means living within our means, planning ahead, and making choices that reflect both care and commitment to those God has placed in our lives.

2. To Bless Others & Be Generous
One of the beautiful things about financial provision is that it’s not just meant for us. God blesses us so that we can be a blessing to others. When we manage our money with wisdom, we create space for generosity—to give freely, support meaningful causes, and reflect God’s heart in the way we serve others.

📖 “You will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God.2 Corinthians 9:11, NLT

Generosity isn’t just encouraged—it’s rewarded. Scripture tells us,

📖 “Give generously and generous gifts will be given back to you, shaken down to make room for more. Abundant gifts will pour out upon you with such an overflowing measure that it will run over the top!”— Luke 6:38, TPT

Giving isn’t about losing—it’s about sowing. God honors a generous heart, and when we give from a place of faith, He promises to provide in return.

3. To Build God's Kingdom
Wealth isn’t just about meeting our needs or helping others—it’s also a way to partner with God in what He’s doing in the world. Our financial resources can support ministries, fund missions, plant churches, and meet practical needs that open the door for people to encounter Christ.

📖 “Let giving flow from your heart, not from a sense of religious duty. Let it spring up freely from the joy of giving—all because God loves hilarious generosity! Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything… and be abundantly supplied for every good work.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7–8, TPT

When we give to Kingdom work, we’re investing in something eternal. Whether it’s tithing to your local church, supporting missionaries, or giving toward outreach efforts, our generosity helps advance the gospel and reflect God’s heart to a hurting world.

It’s not just giving—it’s an act of worship. It’s how we show that we trust God, honor Him first, and want to be part of building something that lasts forever.

🙌 Why This Matters in Everyday Life
Our culture often teaches that wealth is all about personal success, comfort, and status. But God’s design for wealth is so much more intentional—it’s about purpose, not just possession.

Here’s what that looks like in real life:
🔹 Faithful Provision – Taking care of yourself and your loved ones with wisdom and integrity.
🔹 Wise Stewardship – Managing money with discipline, not driven by greed or fear.
🔹 Kingdom Impact – Using your resources to bless others, support ministry, and expand God’s work in the world.

When we understand the true purpose of money, we stop chasing it for security—and start using it as a tool for God’s greater plan.

🎯 Weekly Challenge:
Think about your financial goals. Are they only about personal comfort, or do they also reflect generosity and kingdom impact?

This week, choose one way to use your money for a greater purpose:
✅ Give to someone in need.
✅ Donate to a ministry or charity.
✅ Pay for someone’s meal or groceries.
✅ Set a goal to increase your giving this year.

📖 Reflection Questions:
• How do I view money—as a tool or as a treasure?
• Am I using what I have in a way that honors God and helps others?
• What’s one step I can take toward greater generosity?
